2012 Annual Report

The New York State Convention of Universalists

2011–2012 Report to the
St. Lawrence and Metropolitan New York Unitarian Universalist Districts

The New York State Convention of Universalists (NYSCU) continues to be a major financial supporter of the St. Lawrence and Metropolitan New York districts of the Unitarian Universalist Association, as well as individual programs of those districts. In addition, the NYSCU provides funds to various programs within the UUA, to congregations and individuals, and to interfaith programs congruent with the NYSCU mission.

In 2011, the following grants were awarded:

UU Church of Oneonta

On October 8, 2011, the Annual Meeting of the NYSCU was hosted by the Binghamton UU Congregation shortly after they were (again) flooded by the Susquehanna River. The congregation’s energetic cleanup efforts were greatly appreciated by both NYSCU attendees and those from the Pennsylvania Universalist Convention, who shared the time, program, and place for their annual meeting. This joint venture was a first for both conventions, we think. Keynote speaker Dr. Daniel McKannan is the first holder of the Ralph Waldo Emerson UUA Chair at Harvard Divinity School. His address, “Before Clarence Skinner: Rediscovering Early Universalist Radicals,” is available online at the NYSCU website: NYSCU.org.

Current officers of the NYSCU are Joyce Gilbert, president; Alexa Carter, VP; Thomas Hackett, secretary; Margaret Maguire, treasurer. Tim Hart chairs the service gratuity program (for qualified ministers who served NY Universalist churches prior to merger). Other board members are Julie Alexander, Fred Boreali, Aaron Broadwell, the Rev. John Rex, and Ruth Stewart.

Faithfully submitted,
Joyce T. Gilbert, President, NYSCU
